Opium cannabis seeds from Divine Seeds are a medium-tall Indica marijuana strain that inherits a branchy structure, large final weight, and signature juniper aroma from the best Brazilian and Afghani landrace genetics. The short but heavy Afghan landraces are hardy and bloom densely, with a huge amount of resin that helps them survive in harsh high-altitude conditions. The Brazilian side contributes a fruity aroma and exotic inflorescence shape, reminiscent of lush jungles and the vibrant forms of equatorial vegetation.
To stabilize the Opium strain, Divine Seeds breeders subjected the new Afghan-Brazilian hybrid to a carefully considered sequence of backcrosses with parental varieties, as well as inbreeding and prolonged selection. By identifying the genetic chains associated with the most desirable and competitive traits of both genetic lines, the breeders calculated the optimal sequence. The method was partly based on phenotypic selection, with specimens selected according to key parameters, including plant structure, growth rate, and terpene profile. In short, the desired traits were not just fixed, but brought to record levels!
Opium’s aroma features notes of mango, black pepper, and oriental incense that complement the main pine and spice theme. The main terpenes are myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene.
The seedlings were planted in 25-32 liter containers with well-drained substrate or soil mixture; outdoors, 1 seedling per square meter. Tests in hydroponic systems (DWC, etc.) showed the stress resistance, stability, and enormous potential of the Opium variety. With sufficient root space and good soil aeration, the central stem could reach almost 2 cm in diameter in 2-3 months of vegetation! The structure of the Opium bush was partly reminiscent of Kush genetics (Hindu Kush, Killer Kush F1 Fast Version, Divine OG Kush), but it differed significantly in leaf structure, internode length, and smell. At the end of the growing season, the plant rapidly increased its vegetative mass, i.e., the appearance of hairs (a sign of female sex and the beginning of flowering) was accompanied by a two-week “spurt” of growth. The grassy-fruity smell intensified, acquiring hints of juniper. The final height indoors is 150-180 cm, up to 205 cm outdoors/in greenhouse conditions.
Then, in 4-5 weeks, the dense floral mass spread from the nodes along the entire length of the shoots, as the breeders subjected the plants to training in the middle of the growing season. Without training, Opium would have grown one large bud and 4-5 smaller ones, plus a small number of inflorescences. But in greenhouses and grow boxes, Canadians actively practiced ScroG, as well as other types of training! Since Opium was excellent for cloning, some particularly large specimens were turned into a neat, compact flower bed using the SoG training method. Often, breeders used defoliation to improve the lighting and aeration of the inflorescences. The plants also performed well with a combination of FIM/pruning plus bending. They were found to be resistant to spider mites, thrips, hemp fleas, whiteflies, and powdery mildew. Outdoors, it ripened in early or mid-October.
